OUR ITINERARY
DAY 1
After a well-deserved rest from the trip, we’ll go towards the refuges located at the foot of Cordón del Plata, where we’ll have the first night of acclimatization at almost 3000m.
We’ll take advantage of this last night in the comfort of a warm bed to prepare ourselves for the next days of expedition.
DAY 2
- Estimated hiking time: 3 hours
We continue acclimatizing towards the next camp, Superior Veguitas, in a beautiful place where the humidity and small streams form an oasis of green lawn amidst the rocky Andean terrain. Depending on the group’s mood, we may choose to take the equipment and supplies up a little higher, then descent again to sleep at a lower altitude.
DAY 3
- Estimated hiking time: 4 hours
We set off to conquer 4000m of altitude towards the camp known as Salto de Água, located next to glaciers, at the foot of Vallecitos and Rincón. We’ll go through the well-known “infernillo”, a rather hard stretch due to the constant climb and loose rocks. There are hardly any signs of green or life here, though sometimes birds and insects can be seen.
DAY 4
A day of rest and acclimatization in Salto. We’ll take this time to recharge and prepare physically and mentally for the final attack to the summit. Depending on the weather conditions and the group’s acclimatization, we’ll consider climbing a little higher to the last camp, called Hoyada, one hour above Salto. This would shorten the summit day and help the acclimatization at slightly higher altitude.
DAY 5
- Estimated hiking time: 12 hours
On summit day, we should leave early in the morning for what will be a long journey. We’ll climb to Portezuello, which connects Cerro Plata and Vallecitos, overcoming this long rocky and steep stretch and 1500m of slope. If the weather is good, we should be back in the camp at dusk.
DAY 6
- Estimated hiking time: 4 hours
Descent to the refuge for a well-deserved post-expedition celebration.
As we’ll already be acclimatized, and the return hike is a descent, it should not take long to be back to the refuge.
DAY 7 - 8
Additional days in case of bad weather or need for extra acclimatization.
