Located within the Tijuca National Park, between the neighborhoods of Barra da Tijuca and São Conrado, Pedra da Gávea is the world’s largest coastal monolith, rising 844 meters above sea level. But that is not the only reason why it fascinates both locals and visitors: according to local legends, ancient Phoenicians, who are said to have lived in the area around 800 BC, carved the face visible on the mountain in the likeness of their emperor. Others believe that a geological formation near the summit is actually a portal capable of transporting us to another dimension! Mysteries aside, Pedra da Gávea is a renowned mountaineering destination and is considered the most challenging hike in the city due to its steep sections along the ascent. But the effort is well worth it: from the summit, we are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of Tijuca Forest, the West Zone, and the entire coastline of the South Zone.
OUR TOUR
Ideal for those looking for a true challenge, this hike features a steep rock-climbing section known as Carrasqueira, a nearly vertical rock face approximately 30 meters high! Once we conquer this section, we reach the summit, where we will take a break to have a snack, take photos, admire the surrounding nature, enjoy 360° views of the city, and rest before beginning the descent, which includes a rappelling section.
And don’t worry: throughout the entire hike, in addition to the expertise of our guides, we provide all the necessary safety equipment.
