In 1920, King Albert I of Belgium was invited by President Epitacio Pessoa to visit the Tijuca Peak, the highest mountain in the Tijuca National Park. To make the access easier, the President ordered the construction of a staircase, but as a good mountaineering enthusiast, Albert I preferred to climb. He may have overlooked the 117-step staircase carved into the rocks, but today it makes the Peak even more special: located at the end of the trail, it takes us to the mountain’s top, where we are rewarded by a beautiful 360-degree view of the Marvelous City. From the summit at 1022m above sea level, we can see the Maracanã and Engenhão stadiums, Rio-Niterói Bridge, Barra da Tijuca Beach, Pedra Bonita and Pedra da Gávea, among other famous points in Rio. This panoramic view, together with the beautiful flora and fauna found throughout the trail, make the Tijuca Peak an unforgettable experience.
