A symbol of Rio de Janeiro and Brazil, the Christ The Redeemer was chosen as one of the New Seven Wonders of the Modern World in 2007. Inaugurated in 1931, the 30m-tall statue was designed by engineer Heitor da Silva Costa and sculpted by artist Paul Landowski, in a collaboration between Brazil and France. Perched atop Corcovado Hill at an altitude of 710 meters, it offers a breathtaking view of the city, and is one of Brazil’s and the world’s primary tourist attractions, drawing millions of visitors annually. Another symbol of the city is the Sugarloaf Mountain, in the Urca neighborhood. Its famous cable car, the first one in Brazil, was built in 1912. From it, at 396 meters above sea level, we are privileged by a view that shows why people call Rio the “Marvelous City”.
